Salon des artistes cauchois, 2020, Galerie Duchamp, Yvetot
2020, 124 framed paintings, 24 x 30 cm each.
While researching about the city of Yvetot at the Rouen archive Library, I came across the catalog of an exhibition held at the Yvetot Town Hall in 1957: titled
«Salon des artistes cauchois», this exhibition brought together some well-known works from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts of Rouen (notably a Claude Monet) and amateur painters who lived and worked in the Pays de Caux. On the pages of the catalog there is a numbered list of the titles of the 95 paintings presented in the show, as well as twenty advertisements from shops and businesses in the region which sponsored the exhibition. In Salon des artistes cauchois 2020, I offer a new gaze on this forgotten catalog, of an exhibition also forgotten. For my exhibition Tenir Salon at the Galerie Duchamp in Yvetot, I reproduced on canvases of identical dimensions all of the paintings according to their titles. I prolonged this copyist work and painted the advertisements, the announcements and the cover of the catalog, using the same technique and dimension as the other paintings.
